The Saudi Red Crescent Authority branch in the Eastern Province organized the “Effective Communication with People with Visual Impairments” forum, which was presented by volunteer Salem Al-Dosari, in the presence of the assistant general manager of the branch for operational operations, Ahmed Al-Harith, the director of the Volunteering Department in the Eastern Region, Buthaina Al-Majed, and a number of the Authority’s employees and volunteers.

And this forum comes within the framework of the efforts of the Saudi Red Crescent Authority to enhance awareness among its employees and volunteers, and to develop communication skills and dealing with people with visual disabilities, which is reflected in the quality of humanitarian and emergency services provided to them in various circumstances and situations.

The forum addressed a set of important topics that focused on the correct concepts of dealing with people with visual disabilities, introducing their daily needs, and the importance of direct communication with them in a way that preserves their independence and dignity, in addition to identifying the most prominent supporting tools they use, including the white cane, modern technologies and smart applications that help them navigate and access services and information.

The forum also devoted an important aspect to introducing the mechanisms of dealing with the blind during emergency and medical cases, where the best professional practices were reviewed when dealing with reports or providing emergency service to the blind patient, starting from self-identification and explaining medical and emergency procedures clearly, reassuring the patient and notifying him of what is happening around him, to how to guide, accompany and transport him in a safe manner that preserves his safety and helps him cooperate with the EMS service provider.

The participants also learned about the importance of continuous verbal communication with the blind patient during the provision of medical care, and the need to explain the examination steps and treatment procedures before implementing them, in a way that contributes to building confidence, reducing anxiety and enabling the patient to understand the health and emergency services provided to him. The forum witnessed a distinguished interaction from the attendees through interventions, inquiries, and discussions that reflected the participants’ interest in developing their knowledge and skills in this field, where experiences and practical experiences were exchanged related to dealing with people with visual disabilities in the field and during the provision of ambulatory and humanitarian services.

And the Director of the Volunteering Department, Buthaina Al-Majed, stressed the importance of establishing such awareness and training programs that contribute to raising the efficiency of volunteers and enhancing their readiness to serve various segments of society, noting that spreading awareness of the needs of people with disabilities is an important part of the humanitarian mission and its societal role.
