The Saudi Red Crescent Authority in Al-Qassim Region concluded today a specialized workshop titled “Fundamentals of International Humanitarian Law”, held in cooperation with the Regional Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, and hosted by the House of Culture in Al-Qassim.
The three-day workshop aimed to provide a comprehensive and in-depth introduction to international humanitarian law (IHL) and its core principles governing the conduct of armed conflicts. It also introduced participants to key international treaties and conventions relevant to the field.
The workshop highlighted the vital role of IHL in protecting civilians, civilian infrastructure, prisoners of war, and the wounded and sick during conflicts. It also emphasized raising awareness on the importance of safeguarding humanitarian workers and strengthening preventive measures to ensure their safety and security.
The program included extensive discussions on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s notable efforts in implementing and promoting international humanitarian law under its leadership, as well as addressing contemporary challenges faced by humanitarian practitioners and exploring ways to effectively respond to them.
Mr. Khaled bin Saleh Al-Khudhr, Director General of the SRCA branch in Al-Qassim Region, affirmed that the workshop is part of the ongoing strategic partnership between the Authority and the International Committee of the Red Cross, in coordination with SRCA’s General Directorate of International Cooperation. He noted that it aims to promote awareness of international humanitarian law and reinforce its principles within society.
This workshop reflects the Kingdom’s firm commitment to humanitarian and legal values, as well as its continuous efforts to build qualified national capacities that contribute to alleviating suffering and protecting human dignity in times of crises and conflicts.
